Silence and solitude

June 11, 2017 Series: Habits

Passage: Matthew 4:1

One cultural commentator has called the modern world, “the age of distraction.” We are constantly busy with work, family activities, and hobbies.  Added to this busyness are the digital distractions of iphones and other devices.  Our busyness often leaves us anxious, unfocused, and empty. There is almost a soul-sickness that accompanies our busyness as time alone with God is squeezed out of our hectic schedules.  The discipline of silence and solitude protects us from this constant distraction.   It recognizes that in order to flourish as human beings we need to develop a rhythm of life that involves periods of inactivity and alone time with our creator.  This sermon explains how we can carve out space in our busy lives to become more present with God, ourselves, and others.
